Kristina Lacayo of Green Acres Nursery and Supply in Elk Grove introduces us to a very popular plant with gardener these days: the air plant. She says air plants are part of the bromeliad family and are epiphytes, which are plants that attach themselves to other plants for support. They absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves, not their roots, which they then use only to anchor themselves to other plants or objects.
Air plants do their best when they're not in direct light. They also love humidity (remember they're a subtropical plant!), so if you have a humidifier, Kristina suggests using it with your air plants.
Kristina says the most-asked question about air plants is: How do you water them? Her advice is to soak the plants in water for about an hour or so once a week. The plants will absorb all the moisture and be fine for six to seven days after. Just keep an eye on them and if the tips of the plant are a little brittle and dry, it's time to water.
The No. 1 rule to having air plants as part of your indoor garden is to have fun!
"Be creative and have fun with them," Kristina says. "Put them in a decorative container or add them to wreath. There are no limits to how much fun you can have with them."
